I am Andrea Mammarella, a designer and olfactory researcher working at the intersection of science and emotion. Born in Italy, trained in the Netherlands, and now based between both worlds, I create natural experimental perfumes as immersive emotional experiences—each one grounded in research, memory, and the invisible ties between body, culture, and scent.
The Smelling Brain began as my Master’s thesis at the Royal Academy of Art (KABK) in The Hague. There, I asked a simple but urgent question:
How can we smell, understand, and preserve our emotions—before our noses will be blind?
This question has since evolved into a multidisciplinary practice rooted in design, neuroscience, storytelling, and natural perfumery.
Each perfume I create is an act of resistance—against synthetic saturation, sensory numbness, and emotional detachment. By working only with 100% natural, ethically sourced materials, hand-blending in small batches, and centering smell as a tool for emotional intelligence, I offer an alternative to a world that is forgetting how to smell, and therefore how to feel.
